Is your wardrobe overflowing with clothes you never wear? Decluttering doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With these five simple steps, you’ll transform your wardrobe into an organised, stress-free space you’ll love opening every day.

Wondering how to tidy your wardrobe? We’ve spent years providing custom-made wardrobe systems, which means we’re well-equipped to help you bring some organisation to your current wardrobe! Stick around as we review the five simple steps that will take your wardrobe from cluttered and overwhelming to tidy and sleek.

How to tidy your wardrobe: 5 easy steps

1: Pick out your favourites

Most guides for decluttering your wardrobe recommend taking every item of clothing out of the cupboard and putting it somewhere visible, but this can be overwhelming. We’d recommend a slightly different approach.

All great collections revolve around a few core favourites. There are clothes you often reach for—outfits you keep returning to and comfortable pieces you’d never donate. Start by pulling these out and separating them from the entire process. Not only does this reduce the amount of work, but it will also help you decide which pieces to keep.

2: Form your piles

Label three bags or boxes: Keep, Donate, Unsure, and Toss. Now, go through each item one at a time and ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I love this?
  • Do I wear this often?
  • Does it fit me well?
  • Is it in good condition?

If you answered “yes” to all these questions, place the item in the Keep pile. If it’s in good shape but no longer your style or size, add it to the Donate pile. Anything damaged beyond repair goes in the Toss pile. For everything that’s giving you trouble or trepidation, there’s the Unsure pile (don’t worry, we’ll sort that out in the next step).

Pro Tip: Self-honesty is the best policy for decluttering. When in doubt, use the 3-month rule. If you haven’t worn something in the past 3 months, it might be time to let it go.

3: Have a ‘style’ session

It’s time to take care of that Unsure pile! For those pieces you like but haven’t worn in a while, you have a choice: find a way to style them into the outfits you’re already comfortable with or donate them to clear some vital space.

Take some time to style a few outfits with the pieces in your Unsure pile, searching for combinations that make you more likely to wear the pieces in the coming months. If you can’t find a way to wear these pieces that make you comfortable or happy in your skin, it’s time to pass them on.

4: Reorganise your wardrobe

Now that you have whittled down your wardrobe’s contents, it’s time to organise everything that stays. Start by grouping all your similar items together, like pants, shirts, belts, etc. If you have a wardrobe with built-in sections, you can fill these as you go, but without those sections, you might need to use storage bins or dividers to create that separation.

This is a great time to invest in matching hangers or other space-saving tools to make your wardrobe look tidy and inviting whenever you open it. It’s a small investment that pays off massively in both look and feel.
